Conseiller, expert et consultant en patrimoine : la construction d'une figure de l'Éthiopie contemporaine

Since their inclusion in the World Heritage List in 1978, the small town of Lalibela and the Semèn mountains are moving in step with the transformation of the contemporaneous Ethiopian State and the reinforcement of the globalization of heritage led by, among others, an elite of “consultants”. Articulator of scales manipulating or manipulated by public authorities, the consultant contributes at the same time to anchor the local spaces in the inconsistency of the so-called international norms, to open the country to the neoliberal globalization and to strengthen the power of the mängist. Through the history and the geography of Semèn and Lalibela, this article sketches the portrait of this key figure of the Glocal Ethiopia.
Depuis 1978 et leur inscription sur la Liste du patrimoine mondial de l’Humanité, la petite ville de Lalibela et les montagnes du Semèn se recomposent au fur et à mesure que se transforme l’État éthiopien et que se renforce la mondialisation du patrimoine animée, entre autres, par une élite de « consultants ». Articulateur d’échelles instrumentalisé, manipulant, ou encore négociant avec les autorités publiques, le consultant participe tout à la fois à l’ancrage des espaces locaux dans la sphère des normes internationales, à l’ouverture du pays à la mondialisation et à la consolidation du pouvoir de l’État éthiopien. À travers l’histoire et la géographie du Semèn et de Lalibela, cet article retrace et interroge la construction de cette figure incontournable de la Glocal Ethiopia.
