Projected Histories in the 16th and 21st centuries

Résumé
Combining the study of historiographical texts from the 16th and 21st centuries, this article is dedicated to the genre of the authorial prospectus – a term referring here, in the continuity of its technical use in the history of publishing, to a type of discourse producing the announcement of one or more upcoming books. More specifically, the article confronts Le Dessein de l'histoire nouvelle des François (1599) by Lancelot Voisin de La Popelinière, on the one hand, and on the other Rêves d'histoire (2006/2014) by Philippe Artières. Based on situations and issues that cannot be reduced to one another and which must be taken into account, these two works allow us to observe the joint effects of spatialization and temporalization of which the project as a genre is capable. Retrospective by definition, the discourse of history is here virtualized, projected into a future to the advent of which the prospectus works in its own way, not without knowing that it is uncertain, subject to a set of conditions which are not only due to the desire or skill of the author. In 1599 as in 2006, the register of the project comes from a form of “grey literature” commonly used by historians to obtain various symbolic and financial support from patrons or public institutions. This paper seeks to appreciate the modes of textualization that can affect this prospective form, when it is subjected, as here, to a gesture of publication. Beyond its auxiliary function, this publication of the project tends to recognize in it a consistency and an inalienable value, made to inscribe this preparatory gesture in the long time of posterity.
Croisant l’étude de textes historiographiques du XVIe et du XXIe siècles, cet article est dédié au genre du prospectus auctorial – terme renvoyant ici, dans la continuité de son emploi technique en histoire de l’édition, à un type de discours produisant l’annonce d’un ou plusieurs livres à venir. Plus précisément, il s’agira de placer en regard Le Dessein de l’histoire nouvelle des François (1599) de Lancelot Voisin de La Popelinière, d’une part, et, de l’autre, Rêves d’histoire (2006/2014) de Philippe Artières. À partir de situations et d’enjeux irréductibles les uns aux autres et dont il faudra faire cas, ces deux ouvrages permettent d’observer les effets conjoints de spatialisation et de temporalisation dont le projet comme genre est capable. Rétrospectif par définition, le discours de l’histoire est ici virtualisé, projeté dans un futur à l’avènement duquel le prospectus œuvre à sa façon, non sans savoir celui-ci incertain, soumis à un ensemble de conditions qui ne tiennent pas seulement au désir ou à la compétence de l’auteur. En 1599 comme en 2006, le registre du projet relève d’une forme de « littérature grise » couramment mise à profit par les historien·ne·s afin d’obtenir divers soutiens symboliques, financiers etc. auprès de mécènes ou d’institutions publiques. L’enjeu de cet article consiste à apprécier les modes de textualisation pouvant affecter cette forme prospective, dès lors qu’elle est soumise, comme ici, à un geste de publication. Au-delà de sa fonction auxiliaire, cette mise en partage du projet tend à lui reconnaître une consistance et une valeur inaliénables, faites pour inscrire ce geste préparatoire dans le temps long de la postérité.
