Nathalie Desmet

Résumé

The practices of certain curators who emerged at the beginning of the 2000s, mainly in Northern Europe, present a certain number of points in common, in their preoccupations and their methods, with the artists of the first two waves of institutional criticism. They give themselves the mission to question the institutions from the inside in a critical perspective and in a reforming will. The communication proposes, after having given the example of some projects of Charles Esche, Maria Lind or Nina Möntmann, to show that this similar will to make evolve the institution marks a change in the conception and the perception of this one and by extension of the institutional criticism. The borrowing of the curators to the institutional criticism is done at the same time in the object (questions of definitions, social or linguistic sites...) and in the adopted forms. This new institutionalism, such as it has been described by Jonas Ekeberg, is mainly carried by individuals who have well assimilated the scope of the institutional critique and try to see how they can act on their own structures (often of medium size and financed by public funds), all of them make the observation that the public sphere has changed, that the institutions have undergone the weakening of the welfare state. These curators do not recognize themselves in a rigid definition of the institution, but are aware of the multiplicity of institutional forms. They show the desire at the same time to move away from a type of institutions whose functioning they denounce and to advocate the passage to instituting practices, likely to institute another context for the art.
