Résumé

The tattoo is one of the most extensive body modifications (bodmods) in the world. However, we do not tattoo the face as we tattoo the arm, because the face is public and is closely linked to the identity of the person. The act of transformation then becomes the subject of discussions on what can and cannot be done with the body, which mainly results in the rejection of individuals. Indeed, even if the relationship with bodmods has evolved, they still have a pejorative social connotation, and facial tattooing presents itself as a limit not to be crossed at the risk of creating a definitive social rupture. Based on a selection of interviews (formals and informals), it will be a question of looking at how facial tattooing contributes both to the transformation of the body and to relationships with others. We will see how this transition from one state to another is experienced from the outside as a transgression of social norms, while for the tattooed person it is only a question of becoming oneself.
