Voyager à la folie. Autour des Fous voyageurs de Ian Hacking

Abstract : Abstract How can we understand a marginal phenomenon that began in the 19th century: the mad travelers? These tireless walkers abandon family, friends and the professional world, breaking structures and habits to escape themselves, without goal: they forget who they are. Amnesiac travelers, they don't have memories of the past days and months of peregrination: forgetting oneself, one's family, one's own journey. This is the case of Albert, Mén, Henri, Fidéla, analyzed by Ian Hacking in Mad Travelers. Are these adventures signs of a mental illness or a deviation from the norm, a kind of rebellion ? Are they symptoms of what Hacking calls a transient mental illness, which is born in an environment, an ecological niche-that of the emergence of mass tourism, the spleen of industrial cities, baudelairean romanticism? In this paper, we will question the relationships between travel and madness, travel and identity, travel and escape, based on these paradoxical and fascinating figures that constitute the mad travelers.
